Overview

This course introduces the fundamental elements of the Italian language. Emphasis is on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written Italian as well as demonstrate cultural awareness.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  • Understand oral and written communication (greeting people, asking people their name, where they are from, addressing different people, asking what and where things are, asking questions, describing people and things, indicating people and things, talking about what you have to do, want to do or can do, describing actions)
  • Respond with grammatical accuracy to simple oral and written communication
  • Acquire and communicate using basic grammar structures
  • Understand simple oral and written communication in present and past tense (regular and irregular verbs)
  • Acquire basic and more specific vocabulary
  • Acquire basic “slang” everyday life vocabulary

Malina is an AIESEC trainee and comes from Romania. She holds a Bachelor in Communication and Public Relations and Master of Science in Service Marketing at Constantin Brancoveanu University of Pitesti, Romania. and has a passion for foreign languages.

She is currently working for an executive search firm and discovering the Filipino culture.

Italian is the second language she was fluent with, after English because of the many similarities the language shares with her native language – Romanian.

Outline of Instruction

Unit 1 – Italian  pronunciation  and  characteristics  of  Italian

Language – masculine/feminine nouns, adjectives etc.

– Greetings – You will be able to greet people in Italian, give your

name and ask how people are

Present tense of  the verb “essere” and use of the verb

Pronouns

Gender of nouns

Unit 2 – Nationalities and languages – You will be able to say where you come from and give the language you speak; you will also be

able to ask other people about these subjects

Plural of nouns

Use of the definite article

Unit 3 – Family – You will be able to talk about the people in your family and say how old they are Numbers

Use of the indefinite article

Unit 4 – Time – You will be able to tell the time and give days and months in Italian Present tense
Unit 5 – Directions – You will be able to talk about where objects are in relation to one another and ask for directions to different places in Italian Talking about what you have to do ( verb “dovere”), want to do (verb “volere”), and can do (verb “potere”)

 

Unit 6 – Talking about people – You will be able to describe people, in terms of physical appearance and character Possessive adjectives

Use of the verb “avere” and idiomatic expressions with “avere”
